About the image resizer

Welcome to the free online image resizer from CalculatorForUs! Here, you can resize your images quickly, easily, and in just a few clicks.

The images you upload for resizing are not stored on any server. The entire process—from uploading the image to selecting resizing options and downloading the final result—is performed directly in your browser.

Here’s what you can do with our image resizing tool:

  • Resize images and export them in JPEG, WebP, and PNG formats
  • Maintain the original proportions when resizing
  • Select a background fill color or make it transparent (only for PNG images)

How to use the tool?

Resizing your images is very easy! The first step is to upload an image, and you can do this in two ways.

The first method is by dragging an image into the center of the tool, where it says:

Click to select an image
or drag and drop it here

Alternatively, you can simply click on the upload icon above this text to open a window where you can manually select your image.

Once you do this, a new window will open, displaying the selected image along with several options:

  • Width:  Set a new width for the image.
  • Height:  Set a new height for the image.
  • Maintain Aspect Ratio:  This button locks and unlocks the aspect ratio of your resized image. If the padlock icon is closed, the aspect ratio is locked. If the icon is open, the aspect ratio is unlocked.

With the aspect ratio locked, you can resize the image without altering its proportions.

With the aspect ratio unlocked, you have additional options:
    • Background Fill (Letterbox):  If this option is not selected, unlocking the aspect ratio may result in a distorted image. However, if selected, your image will be proportionally resized within a box—either with sidebars (if the height is smaller than the width) or top and bottom bars (if the width is smaller than the height).
    • Background Color:  This field allows you to set a color for the letterbox background.
    • Transparent Background (PNG Only):  If enabled, the letterbox background will be transparent. This option is available only for PNG images.
  • Image Format:  Choose the output format for your image: JPEG, PNG, or WebP.
  • Download Image:  Click here to download your resized image.

Why resize images?

Resizing images is an essential task for various purposes, from web optimization to print adjustments. Here are some reasons why you may need to resize an image:

  • Website and blog optimization:  Large images can slow down a webpage. Resizing helps reduce file size without compromising quality.
  • Social media:  Each platform has recommended dimensions for posts, stories, and profile pictures. Adjusting images prevents unwanted cropping and improves display.
  • Printing:  Photos for printing need proper resolution and size to avoid distortion or pixelation.
  • Storage efficiency:  Resizing images can significantly reduce file size, saving storage on devices and servers.

What is the difference between resizing and cropping?

Resizing and cropping images are often confused, but they are different processes:

  • Resizing:  Keeps the entire image while adjusting its width and height. It can maintain the original aspect ratio or change it.
  • Cropping:  Removes parts of the image to adjust framing or fit a desired aspect ratio.

For example, if you have a 4000x3000 pixel photo and want to adjust it to 800x600, resizing will reduce the entire image proportionally. Cropping, on the other hand, may cut out edges to maintain a specific framing.

If you just want to adjust the size without losing any details, resizing is the best option. If you need to remove unwanted parts, cropping may be more suitable.

Tips to maintain image quality when resizing

When resizing images, it’s important to maintain quality to avoid distortions and loss of sharpness. Here are some tips to ensure good results:

  • Use appropriate formats:
    • JPEG:  Best for photos and images with many colors.
    • PNG:  Ideal for images with transparency.
    • WebP:  Balances quality and file size, making it great for the web.
  • Avoid resizing multiple times:  Each time an image is resized, it may lose details, especially if it's in JPEG format.
  • Keep the aspect ratio when possible:  Resizing without maintaining the aspect ratio can result in stretched or squished images.
  • Use background fill (letterbox) when necessary:  If you need a fixed size without distorting the image, adding borders can be a good alternative.

Proportional vs. distorted resizing: which one to choose?

When resizing an image, you can choose to maintain the original aspect ratio or adjust it freely, which may cause distortion.

  • Proportional:  Maintains the relationship between width and height, preventing the image from being stretched or compressed. This is the best option to preserve the natural appearance of the photo.
  • Distorted:  Modifies width and height independently, which can deform the image. This may be useful in specific cases but is generally avoided.

If you need a fixed size without distorting the image, a solution is to use background fill (letterbox), which adds margins to maintain the aspect ratio.

Letterbox: when and why to use it?

Background fill (letterbox) is useful when you need to fit an image into a specific size without distorting it. Instead of stretching or cropping parts of the image, the tool adds side (or top and bottom) bars to maintain the original aspect ratio.

Some situations where letterbox can be useful:

  • Thumbnails and previews:  Platforms like YouTube and social media may require fixed image sizes, and letterbox prevents unwanted cropping.
  • Presentations and slides:  If an image doesn’t fit the presentation layout, letterbox allows adjustments without distorting the image.
  • Design and print layouts:  Certain layouts require images of specific proportions, and letterbox ensures a proper fit without content loss.

If using PNG, you can opt for a transparent background to better integrate the image into your design.

Frequently asked questions about the subject

Does the tool resize images without losing quality?

Yes! The tool maintains the best possible quality when resizing your images. However, it is important to choose the appropriate format to avoid excessive compression.

Can I resize images without maintaining the original aspect ratio?

Yes, you can disable the option to maintain the aspect ratio and set the width and height freely. However, this may distort the image. If you want to avoid distortion, use the background fill option (letterbox).

What image formats are supported?

Currently, the tool allows you to export images in JPEG, PNG, and WebP formats.

Is the resizing done online, or are my images uploaded to a server?

The resizing happens 100% in your browser. No images are uploaded to servers, ensuring complete privacy.

Can I set a transparent background when using the background fill option?

Yes, but only if you save the image in PNG format, as other formats do not support transparency.

Is there a size limit for the images I can resize?

There is no fixed limit, but very large images may consume more memory in your browser and impact performance.

How can I resize an image without losing quality?

To resize an image without losing quality, choose an appropriate format (such as PNG or WebP), maintain the original aspect ratio, and avoid resizing multiple times. Our tool preserves quality as much as possible.

What is the best format to save a resized image?

It depends on your needs: PNG maintains transparency, JPEG is ideal for smaller file sizes, and WebP offers a good balance between quality and compression.

How can I resize images for social media?

Each social media platform has recommended dimensions for posts, stories, and profile pictures. You can use our tool to adjust your images to the ideal size without losing quality.

How do I change the width and height of an image online?

Our tool allows you to manually adjust the image’s width and height. Simply upload the image, enter the desired values, and download the final file.

What should I do if an image looks stretched or squashed after resizing?

If the image appears distorted, enable the option to maintain the aspect ratio or use the background fill (letterbox) to adjust the size without deformation.

Can I convert the image format while resizing?

Yes! When resizing the image, you can choose between JPEG, PNG, and WebP formats for export.

How do I resize an image for printing?

For printing, it's best to maintain high resolution and use formats like PNG or JPEG with maximum quality. Make sure the image has at least 300 DPI for a good print result.
